Carl Shafer driver

#21 Stair-Monza

Carl Schafer was the first to drive the Monza designed and built by Pat Stair for Jack Sandberg's "Metal Masters" team and 1980 SCCA Trans-Am effort. John R. "Jack" Sandberg was owner of JRS Racing and Metal Masters of Minneapolis, and was a notable Reno airplane racer. Shafer, a noted Camaro driver, only drove the car once at the 1980 Hallett Trans-Am race.

In 1981, the car was sold to Dick Kantrud of Minnesota, who raced the Monza in SCCA Trans-Am and Club Racing for the 1981 and 1982 seasons.

The Monza was purchased by Marshal Kirkof in 1983, who also club raced in SCCA GT-1 class. Apparently, the car hit the bridge abutment at Brainerd Int'l Raceway and was repaired, then sold to Rick Balderson between 1983 and 1984.

Rick Balderson with #66 Stair-Monza at SCCA Club Race

Daytona Int'l Speedway, Daytona Beach, FL in 1987.

In 1983, Rick Balderson purchased the Stair Monza from Marshall Kirkof after repairs following an accident with an abutment at Brainerd. (May be referring to the underpass on 3.1 mile Donnybrooke course at turn 9.)

Rick campaigned his Monza in some 18 regional, divisional and national SCCA races in Florida, between 1985-1989. He also qualified for the 1986 IMSA Camel GT 12 hours of Sebring endurance race with 77 other cars, but had problems starting. See video

As of 2012, Balderson's Stair built Monza has been stored in a warehouse in central Florida since 1989. While it is a "basket case," the restorable car has been in the possession of Art Sierzanga, Rick's crew chief and owner of Corvette Tech, Inc of  Debary, FL.

Mike's Monza (c/n Stair)

Mike Perrotti became proud owner of the Stair Monza in late 2012. It was purchased from Art Sierzanga, owner of Corvette Tech in Florida. Art was chief mechanic for Rick Balderson, fourth owner of the car. The Perrotti crew has already begun full restoration of the car, which was originally built by Pat Stair for IMSA and Trans-Am racing.

Ken Perrotti and brother Chris rebuilt the Stair-Monza together and did a total ground-up job. The engine is a refurbished NASCAR power plant, 358 cubic-inch Chevrolet small-block V-8 with ample sized Holley carburetor, which produces over 600 horsepower. It was built by Keith Dorton who built engines for Dale Earnhardt. It also has a $5,000 custom stainless steel crossover header exhaust. The race car still has its original Borg-Warner Super T-10, 4-speed manual transmission, and it is coupled to a Schiefer Quick-Change Rear End differential. When Perrotti bought the Monza from Rick Balderson it came with Hurst/Airheart disc brakes. Perrotti said, Dick Kantrud disliked the brakes and were always terrible. The brakes were changed over to new Wilwood 6-piston type by Perrotti. The car runs on Kodiak light-weight racing wheels, sizes 16x10 front and 16x12 rear. The Stair-built Chevy Monza weighs in at 2,400 pounds, which was also the target weight for the IMSA GT Monzas. The car's weight to power ratio makes it neck snapping fast and translates to less than 4.00 pounds per horsepower. That is equivalent to a Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach Package street production sports car with 887 horsepower and weighing 3,616 pounds.
