DELIVERY OF A USED DETROIT BOMBER

In the Summer of 1977, a friend of mine and I took a long bus ride half-way across the country to Washington DC. His grandfather had an old '62 Bonneville and just gave the car to him, no money. It had power everything, factory air conditioning, about 90k on the odometer, and a crack in the exhaust manifold.

We drove the blue Bonneville all the way back to Wisconsin along the turnpike. It was an absolute gas guzzle, and only delivered about 10 miles per gallon with the AC running. It was a hot and humid trip and took turns driving non-stop through the night. We were cash strapped kids and could only afford to run the AC for brief periods, just to keep from passing out. But my friend finally had his first car.

Cool cars in the neighborhood

This Bonneville 4 door Hard Top with identical trim and color was owned by "Four-barrel Floyd", a friend's dad and lawyer. It could still smoke the tires with seven high schoolers joy riding along. It had an AM/FM stereo radio and interior smelled of his dad's stogies.

Engine

In 1967, the 400 and 428 cubic-inch V8s replaced the 389 and 421 V8s of previous years.

In 1969, the standard Bonneville engine was a four-barrel unit rated at 360 hp with Turbo Hydro-Matic 400 three-speed. There was an optional 428 engine available rated at 390 hp @ 5,200 rpm and torque rating of 465 lb ft @ 3,200 rpm. These car could fly and both burned premium gas!

The 428 cu in (7.0 L) engine that offered as much as 390 horsepower. Fuel/air delivery was supplied by a Rochester Quadrajet spread-bore carburetor that delivered 800 cfm.
