Michael Keyser -
Monza DeKon c/n 1003 |
First Owner |
|
This
car was the first of the two DeKon-built Monzas owned and driven by
Michael Keyser of Baltimore, Maryland. Mike competed with this
particular car in the first half of the 1976 IMSA Camel GT
season only. Keyser had great successful with the car and often
dueled door-to-door with Al Holbert's dark blue Monza. Mike scored
four podium finishes that included one win at the Mid-Ohio
Sports Car Course on June 6, 1976. This was the last time he
actually drove DeKon c/n 1003.
Mr. Keyser said he stopped driving the first Monza
(DeKon c/n 1003) after taking delivery of a second
Monza (DeKon c/n
1006), which debuted a week later at the 24
Hours of Le Mans in France. There are a few historic
auto race websites with a fine collection of old
results. It is now clear DeKon c/n 1003 Monza was
not
driven by Keyser after his June 6, 1976 Mid-Ohio
IMSA race. He then began piloting his second Monza
(DeKon c/n 1006) for the remainder of 1976, and he
never drove c/n 1003 again.
Mike Keyser sold his first Monza to Brad Frisselle
of El Segundo, California. More presently, the DeKon
c/n 1003 Monza is owned by Toby Bean of Lafayette,
Louisiana. |

Brad Frisselle
- Monza
DeKon c/n 1003 |
Second Owner |
|
Brad Frisselle purchased the car
from Michael Keyser. The Monza was developed further for the
1977 IMSA race season. Brad placed fifth in the 1977
IMSA Camel GT Championship, quite impressive for his first year in
IMSA's GTO category.
In 1978, the Brad Friselle Racing team
went to France for the 24 hours of Le Mans.
Along with co-drivers Bob Kirby and John Hotchkiss, the team
would suffer through two blown engines in practice. Parts from both
V8 engines were used to make one good motor, and they
qualified for 26th out of 56 cars on the starting grid.
Once the race
started, the Monza moved up to 18th place by lap eight. Less
than four hours into the endurance race, a cracked engine block
and gearbox troubles put them out of the race. The Frisselle Racing Monza was the only American car entered in the
Le Mans 24 hour race that year. For 1978, he finished
eighth in the World Endurance Championship, a series comprised
of European and American endurance races. |

Toby Bean -
Monza DeKon c/n 1003 |
|
The former Mike Keyser/Brad Frisselle DeKon is maintained by
Paul Walker for Toby Bean of Norcross, GA.
The 1975 DeKon Monza is powered by a 6.0L Chevrolet fuel
injected small-block V8.
Bean owned two DeKons for a few years. In
December 17, 1995, he purchased Allan Moffat's old Monza DeKon
c/n 1005 from John Tesoriero of Australia. He and Tesoriero and
worked together through a labyrinth of red tape to import the
car from Australia. Bean then stored Moffat's
DeKon c/n 1005 along side his other Monza, DeKon c/n 1003.
In 1999, Steve Simpson, of Buford, GA, purchased Bean's second
DeKon c/n 1005. Simpson is the founder of Historic Sportscar
Racing, a vintage racing club, which organizes and sanctions
race events around the country.
