In a February 1976 interview Moffat remarked, “Last November, at Daytona, I reached the highest speed I have ever made on a race track - 204 mph, in this very same Monza I have now. I had gone to the US at the invitation of my old pal, Horst Kwech, who is actually an expatriate Australian …”

Allan Moffat Racing - Monza DeKon c/n 1005

The first DeKon Monza to win a championship!

Allan Moffat was one of the first driving forces behind the development of the tube-frame Chevrolet Monza "silhouette" race car. He worked together with design engineer Lee Dykstra at Kar Kraft in Michigan. They consulted with Horst Kwech to build their first Monza. Kwech was a talented race car construction engineer and a SCCA Trans-Am Championship driver. Allan knew and admired Horst as a successful and fellow SCCA competitor since the mid-1960s. The two also co-drove a few races in the past.

In 1974, Lee Dykstra and Horst Kwech formed DeKon Engineering, Ltd. in Libertyville, IL. Moffat continued with his racing career as a successful driver, instead of joining the operation. DeKon began producing a few silhouette race cars for IMSA GT class racing, using the Chevrolet Monza as a shell. Moffat's Monza was the fifth chassis (c/n 1005) to roll out of DeKon's Libertyville, IL shop in 1975. The car was built to the same specifications of DeKon's first Monza chassis 1001.

At first, Horst Kwech entered DeKon c/n 1005 as car no. 3, and drove it at Mid America IMSA GT. Moffat came out and co-drove with Kwech at the Mid-Ohio 6-hour IMSA GT endurance race. Despite a DNF at Mid-Ohio, Allan ended up buying the car around the time he drove it at the IMSA GT Daytona Finale in November 1975. He later recalled during an interview, "Last November, at Daytona, I reached the highest speed I have ever made on a race track … 204 mph, in this very same Monza I have now."

One month and $10,000 later, Moffat air-freighted his Monza (DeKon 1005) dream car to New Zealand for its first test with Allan Moffat Racing. He described his Monza as having a 5.7L Chevrolet V8 with Kinsler fuel injection, about 550 bhp, and a 4-speed transmission. It had a computer designed adjustable race suspension, a fabricated front sub-frame and a special box-flared lightweight body that rode on 12 inch wide front wheels and 16 inch rears.

Moffat campaigned his DeKon Monza in the Australian Sports Sedan Championship, and Marlboro Sports Sedan Series. These road racing series were sanctioned by Confederation of Australian Motor Sports and held at numerous tracks throughout Australia and New Zealand. Results were so incredible that Moffat clinched the title for the Australian Sports Sedan Championship 1976. There were protests by other drivers, and much controversy, despite his car being compliant and homologated under CAMS rules. The car was just too fast and no one could catch it! Subsequently, the car's chassis and engine were detuned as the result of increasing dissatisfaction from his competitors.

Allan Moffat was one of Australia's most popular drivers, whose participation and visibility at races drew in crowds of spectators. He was a highly revered sports sedan driver, who enjoyed great success and popularity Down Under. It's been said that you either liked him or hated him. However, no one can accuse him of being anything but a true road racer and gentleman. He did his best and achieved his goal.

Paul Jones - Monza DeKon c/n 1005
Third owner

Paul Jones purchased DeKon 1005 on May 22, 1981 from Moffat. A month later, Jones raced the Monza in the fourth round of the 1981 ASSC at Oran Park. He finished fifth overall, then was able to retain sponsorship from Horner Kato. The color scheme was changed. The body was repainted yellow with red accent trim applied. Horner Kato decals were black on white letters and were prominently displayed. At the end of the season Jones decided to sell his Monza to Neil Brain and Fred Ewing.

Neil Brain/Fred Ewing - Monza DeKon c/n 1005

Fourth owner

On October 11, 1982, Fred Ewing and Neil Brain purchased DeKon 1005. Ewing and Brain updated the aerodynamics of the Monza. They added a rear IMSA style wing, and larger front spoiler. Graham Oliver built a six liter engine, and it was converted back to fuel injection.  A large hood scoop was added to accommodate the injector stack, and louvers were cut into the hood. The car number was changed to 76. They received sponsorship from Pennant Hills Suspension and AUS Shocks.

Brain and Ewing both drove the Monza. They competed at various events including Amaroo in 1983 and 1984. Neil Brain crashed the Monza at Australia's Amaroo Park. By the end of the '84 season, Brain and Ewing decided to place an ad in an Australian magazine and sold the Monza.

More information about the car's provenance and any corrections is very much appreciated.

John Tesoriero purchased the DeKon around September '84. Not much is known about the DeKon during his 11 year ownership. Apparently the car was sold on or around December 17, 1995 to Theo Bean. A reference mentions that Tesoriero and Bean worked through the labyrinth of red tape to import the car into the U.S. Bean stored Moffat's old Monza with his other DeKon (c/n 1003), the Brad Frisselle car.

Also it is said, DeKon 1005 was purchased by Steve Simpson, of Buford, GA on January 1, 1999. Simpson is the founder and owner/president of Historic Sportscar Racing, LTD in Georgia. The car may have been stored the car at Simpson Racing. It is said, the car was advertised for sale on the HSR website. The car was sold on July 4, 2005 to an unknown party in California. As of 2012, it is said the current owner is restoring Allan Moffat's old Monza.
