Al Holbert - Holbert Racing
First owner DeKon c/n 1008
The son of racecar driver Bob Holbert, Al
Holbert also ran their Volkswagen-Porsche dealership in Warrington, PA.
Al Holbert worked for Roger Penske while
studying at Lehigh University. In 1971, Holbert scored his
first race win in a Porsche and would turn professional in
1974. He would score his first of his two IMSA titles in
1976 and 1977 in a Chevrolet Monza. Building on his
success after winning the 1976 IMSA title, Holbert traded in
his first DeKon (c/n 1008) Monza for a new
DeKon (c/n 1014) for the '77 IMSA season. He sold c/n 1008 to John Paul,
owner and driver for J.L.P. Racing. Hoping to
capitalize on Holbert's success with c/n 1008, Paul's effort
wasn't quite the same despite updates to a phase 4 body
style.
In 1976, Al had an incident at Lime Rock in
the first heat. According to an eye witness, Holbert headed into
the first turn and locked up the brakes then slid off the
track. The car went up the bank and flipped over on its
side. They patched it back together in time to start 3rd and
finish 22nd, although technically a DNF for only 31 of 66
laps. In the photo above, you can see the large anti-roll
bar behind the rear axle. And, what looks like a pulley
under the rear axle is actually a differential oil cooler.
Being a Porsche supporter, Holbert allowed
Porsche technicians to inspect his Monza, which would
eventually lead to Porsche entering the series with
turbocharged cars such as the 934 that led to a Porsche
dominance for the following years. During that time Holbert
jumped ship to the Stuttgart marque. |

John L. Paul - J.L.P. Racing
Second owner DeKon c/n 1008
John Paul (Sr.)
was an American racecar driver, born in The
Netherlands. He created J.L.P. Racing and won
SCCA, Trans-Am and IMSA GT championships. In
1977, he purchased Al Holbert's first DeKon
Monza c/n 1008, hoping to
capitalize on the previous owner's success. Even thought the
car received some modifications, Paul's results
were not the same as Holbert's. The Monza platform was
being outgunned by Porsche, who dominated again after IMSA
allowed use of twin turbochargers. |

Fort Lauderdale`s John Hayes-Harlow, the
transplanted Brit who raced a 10- year-old
Chevrolet-Monza to a 10th-place finish in the GTO
portion of the Grand Prix of Miami, so impressed car
owner Joe Gonzalez with his drive that he has earned
another start at the Grand Prix of Charlotte May 18.
Hayes- Harlow is also hoping to secure enough
financing to race in the GTO event at the Grand Prix
of Palm Beach.

Is Considering Plan To Shorten Its Track." Sun
Sentinel April 16, 1986
Hayes-Harlow will be renting his ride for Sunday’s
Grand Prix of Palm Beach, driving a 1976 Chevrolet
Monza in the 45-minute race through the streets of
West Palm Beach.
"Joe Gonzalez from Miami owns the car," Hayes-Harlow
said. "He ran the Monza himself for a year and then
bought a Mercury Capri to replace the Monza. At the
time of the Grand Prix of Miami, he hadn’t sold the
Monza, and I needed a car to race, so I rented it
(finishing 10th). Then we teamed up at Charlotte and
finished eighth."
At Palm Beach, Hayes-Harlow will be renting the
Monza and going solo, but it might be his last ride
in the car. "Joe’s getting ready to sell it,"
Hayes-Harlow said. "So I’ll be looking for something
else real soon."
Preferably something a little more current. "I enjoy very much beating people with an older
car," he said. "I’ve never had the opportunity to
drive an up-to-date car. This is what I’ve been
stuck with."
Originally, the car belonged to reigning Camel GT
champion Al Holbert.
"I often wonder if Holbert sits on the sidelines
wondering, 'Isn’t that my car?’ "said Hayes-Harlow,
who noted that Palm Beach race promoter Lloyd Frink
owned the car at one point, too. "My whole thing is
to do as well as I can. This car doesn’t hold any
romantic attractions to me. If it finishes a race, I
like it. My whole idea is to advance from the Monza
to something more competitive."
"I had this crazy idea about doing stock cars when I
first came over," he said. "I would really like to
try that. I’ve talked to a couple of guys about
running the short tracks. And I’m still trying to
persuade some people."
But with the possibility of his rent-a-Monza being
sold, Hayes-Harlow said sports cars always will come
first. "When the Monza is sold, I will continue to
live on dreams," he said.
