Greg Pickett
First
owner DeKon 1010 - Pickett Racing
1976-1977
|
Pickett took delivery of his DeKon in
1976, owned the car for about
one-year and drove the 1977
season. He entered eleven races in SCCA Trans-Am,
Cat. II and one
or more IMSA Camel GT races. Pickett's best finish with this car was
2nd at Westwood Racing Circuit and was Canada's
first road course. The 1.8 mile track was located in
Vancouver, BC area but is now gone. Greg Pickett traded his DeKon
for Jerry Hansen's Corvette and got a little cash in the
deal. He went
on to win Trans-Am championship the following year in
that Corvette. |
|
|
"I entered my
first IMSA 'pro' race in 1974 or ’75
at Laguna Seca Raceway. In 1976 I
ordered my first new race car to run
the next year’s (1976) Trans Am
series... a Decon [DeKon]
Monza build by Horst Kroll [Kwech]
and Lee Dykstra. I ran the Trans Am
season in 1976. What was important
about that year was that, late in
the season, we had gone to Elkhart
Lake and Jerry Hansen showed up with
one of the latest Greenwood
Corvettes designed by Bob Riley and
built by Protofab Engineering...
that was Charlie Selix and Gary
Pratt. I remember that big block
Corvette. He would go by me on the
straightaway by easily 30-40 MPH.
Eventually we traded cars and a
little bit of money and I got the
Riley/Greenwood Corvette."

Second owner - 1978
Midwest Federal / LSI Corp. / Berger
Transfer
Winner of 27 SCCA national racing championships, Hansen
was the best of the best drivers in almost any type of
car, from Showroom Stock to his preference for all-out
Can-Am and big-bore production race cars. However, the Monza he got from Pickett
in a trade was just a brief ride, and perhaps not his
favorite. Below are two posts from internet forums
about Hansen's DeKon Monza.
"The car is a Chevrolet Monza. Jerry
Hansen got the Monza in a trade with Greg Pickett after
the 1977 Trans Am season. Hansen traded his Greenwood
super Corvette, the one with the radiators in the doors,
to Pickett for Pickett's Monza and some cash. Pickett
went on to win the 1978 Trans Am championship in the
Corvette. Hansen drove the Monza sparingly, but did win
the Brainerd Trans Am. He lent the car to Monte Shelton
for the Road America race when Shelton's car broke in
practice. He later sold the Monza to Gerry Wellik a
fellow Minnesotan, but I believe borrowed it on an
occasion or two. This would account for the different
paint jobs." - Tom Schultz
Jerry still drove this car on occasion
after he sold it to Gerry Wellik. The Berger on this car
was a Trucking Company and the LSI was a cabinet making
concern of Gerry Wellik's. Jerry Hansen says that:
"Gerry Wellik was a real quality guy." Jerry really
enjoyed being with Wellik. - Jerry Entin
In 2011, I had the opportunity to talk with Doug Rippie, former team
driver for Gerry Wellik Racing/Team LSI, who occasionally test
drove the Monza. Doug drove his own '69
Corvette in the vintage race group at the SCCA Regional club
race at Brainerd, Minnesota that year. He said, "Jerry Hansen got the car from Greg Pickett after
trading his Corvette for the Monza. He didn’t
like the car much, as it was high maintenance. He only drove the car for a short
period... and may have been part owner with Gerry Wellik."
Mr. Rippie also
mentioned that Gerry Wellik and his chief mechanic, Mike Lindorfer, took the
Monza to Mexico to race it in 1978. - Stacy

Wellik
Third owner: 1978-1982 Gerry Wellik Racing / Team LSI
LSI Corporation |
|
Ownership of this car and
it's chassis number is convoluted during
this period. Gerry Wellik may have owned two
Monza DeKons, no. 1007 and 1010.
According to one of his team drivers, Gerry Wellik bought
DeKon 1010 from friend Jerry Hansen and
continued with the same race number on
car.
According to Rippie, "Hansen still drove the car on occasion after selling it."
Some race results
found online show different
chassis numbers for Gerry Wellik's
Monza. Four races with DeKon c/n 1007
and two other race entries don't specify
any chassis number. Wellik's best finish with
the Monza was
3rd at Watkins Glen's SCCA Trans-Am race on August
5, 1979. He also finished 4th at Trois-Rivières, QC
SCCA Trans-Am on September 1, 1979. Some
of Wellik's sponsors were Berger Transfer, and
his own LSI Corporation. Team drivers
were Jerry Hansen, Doug Rippie,
and Gerry Wellik. Hansen
is quoted as saying, "Gerry Wellik was a
real quality guy," and enjoyed being with him.
|
|
Gerald Wellik was the founder of LSI
Corp. of America, which makes plastic-laminated
cabinets and shelves used in hospitals and schools
around the nation. He graduated from the University
of Minnesota with a degree in business and began his
career as a salesman and was a natural entrepreneur
and businessman. In 1967, he founded LSI Corporation
of America, Inc., which became a major manufacturer
of plastic laminate casework for schools and
hospitals. Through his tireless work ethic, LSI grew
to national prominence and was an industry leader.
For several years Gerry was a
successful SCCA sports car driver. In the early
1970s, Wellik began participating in the SCCA
Trans-Am sports car racing series, competing at
Brainerd International Raceway, as well as circuits
in California, New York, Florida, Canada and Mexico.
In 1980, he raced as part of a three-man team of
Minnesotans in the Daytona 24-hour Challenge.
The February 5, 1980, Minneapolis
Star reported that as he was cruising at 165 mph,
when his Camaro blew a right rear tire. "It just
popped. I thought it was all over," Wellik said.
After the blowout, his car slowed and turned
backwards. "That's a heck of a feeling, going
backwards down the track and watching those guys
coming at you," said Wellik. Wellik had to fix the
tire himself, a rule in the endurance race. He and
his teammates had other mechanical problems as well,
but finished fifth in the GTO class and 19th
overall.
Jerry Hansen was the nation's top
amateur road racer from Minnesota, owned Brainerd
International Raceway, and raced a car owned by
Wellik in the early 1970s. Hansen said, "Gerry was a
quality guy, who promoted and supported racing."
Gerry Wellik continued to follow auto
racing over the years. He retired in 1999 and
was 75 years old when he passed away on September
30, 2007. |

The owner of this red Monza #33 (above) is unknown. But if
writing on the roof is correct, this would be DeKon c/n
1010. Photos
were taken at Mission Raceway Park in Mission, BC,
Canada at the British Columbia Historic Motor Races in 2007.
Chassis identity has not yet been determined, whether or not
it is Greg
Pickett's old car, which was subsequently and apparently
owned by Mike Rounds. That car was said to have gone
with next owner to Canada, around 1982. Coincidently, the number 33
is same as Mike Rounds. The writing on the roof reads, "Drivers: Greg
Picket 1976 Trans-Am Champion, Jerry Hansen 1978
Road Atlanta Champion." |
