Bob Blacklaw, a speedway racer, also raced a Monza
from 1989 to 1992. It has been said that Blacklaw may have owned
either the John
White Monza prior to Maurice Pickering, or the Red Dawson Monza
which was built in the U.S. by DeKon Engineering.
John White's Monza has right-hand drive, unlike Bob's #78
(above) which is left-hand drive. That would suggest it was more
likely to be Dawson's DeKon Monza, or some other U.S. built
chassis with left-hand drive.
An
ecstatic Allan Moffat stands by his own DeKon Monza, which was
air shipped from the US to New Zealand in late 1975, for $10,000. Barely used,
Moffat bought the car from
Horst Kwech of DeKon Engineering.
This car was built by US speedway
chassis builder Grant King.

How Many Aussie Monzas Were There?
From Autosport.com as posted by Lee
Nicolle - April 21, 2011
1.
Bob Jane Monza. Built by Pat
Purcell and raced by Bob in 1980. Driven by
Brock 82-83. Sold to Alan Browne in 1984 and
raced by Gricey. Then sold onto Brian
Thomson who raced it in 1985 in conjunction
with Brad Jones and the Mercedes 450sl. It
was then converted into the Supra in 1989.
Supra was then sold onto Des Wall in 1990
who still owns it. David has raced at least
once in the National series and made an
appearance in the NSW state series driving
it. From what I have read it would be a huge
task to ever convert back into the Monza. I
have also read that the original body moulds
are sitting in someones shed in Melbourne.
2.
Allan Moffat Dekon Monza.
Chassis 1005. IMSA spec car. Raced in 1976
before Moffat used the Capri. Came out of
the shed to race again in the Camel Filter
Brown livery in 1980. It was sold to Paul
Jones who raced it in orange livery (1982)
and then onto Neil Brain in red livery from
1984 (Pennant Hills Suspension).The car
eventually ended up overseas and is
currently being restored.
3.
Red Dawson Dekon Monza.
Chassis 1001. IMSA spec car. Raced by John
Briggs from 1980 (Black Camel End Rust
sponsored) before being sold to Mike Griffin
and then onto Jeff Barnes in 1984 (Lithgow
Tyre Service / Lithgow Hotel). He raced it
through to 1994 and was for sale in 1995.
Underwent a massive revamp by K&A
engineering in the late 80s. Apparently the
car currently resides in NSW somewhere.
4.
John White Monza. Raced by
John predominantly in Qld before being sold
to Colourscan team and raced by Danny
Osbourne. It was then sold onto Maurice
Pickering who raced it a couple of times in
the Gold Coast Indy support races. Maurice
has the car for sale in 1995 through to
1997. It was sponsored by ABS and later
Penrite Oils. It is apparently in a shop
front in Newcastle NSW somewhere.
5.
Art McKee NZ Monza built by
Grant King. Raced by John Pollard, John
Chambers (1981 - 1984), Rowan Harmon, Geoff
Munday, Mike Imrie, Chris Fing (Owned at
least from 1996 - 2001) and is now in VIC
owned by Rowan Harmon.
6.
Graeme Whincup Rotex Esselite
Dymo Monza - Built By John Riordon in 1979
from a wreck bought in from the States.
Raced by Graeme Whincup and now owned by
Rowan Harman. This car was driven by both
Bob Jane and Jim Richards at one off
meetings.
7.
Daryl Siedle General Electric
Car - Raced by Whincup and eventually owned
by Stephen Voight who bought it around 2002.
The Monza was for sale recently on My105 and
sat at the Brock museum as a replica of the
Bob Jane Monza. The last time it may have
been raced was in 2002 by Voight at Eastern
Creek. It was built along side the IMSA Spec
car. I am pretty sure Whincup owned the car
from the early 80's through to its sale to
Voight in 2002. Was on display int he
Champion Museum. Unsure of its current
owner.
8.
Darryl Siedle IMSA car -
Owned by John Riorden. Built to race in the
IMSA series. Owned by Mike Imrie as early as
1987 (raced it in Rd1 of Whitehorse Truck
Series) who dismantled the car for the
creation of the black Saab in 1994/1995.
Mike apparently still has the body shell for
it. The shell was for sale in 1998 in
Autoaction.
9.
Bob Blacklaw Monza. Raced in
the early 90's and now sitting in the
Bathurst Museum.
Feature Monza Film
Sandown Park Raceway,
Victoria, Australia - July 4, 1976
Allan Moffat
(starting 4th) drives his #200 white Monza DeKon at The Marlboro
Cup, round 2 - Heat 2 of the 1976 Australian Sports Sedan
Championship on July 4, 1976. The race field has
some 27 cars on the 1.9 mile 13 turn track at Sandown Park
Raceway in Victoria, AU. Moffat specified his car number for
this day, the colors and graphics to commemorate the USA's 200th
anniversary.
Monza Mission Statement
This is a
tribute website dedicated to the memory of the Chevrolet Monza
silhouette GT race car, and its place in motor
sports history. The Monza
took away Porsche's dominance in American GT road
racing for a few short years. The car was primarily
campaigned in IMSA Camel GT and SCCA Trans-Am, from
the start of the 1975 season. The GT Monza also
enjoyed similar popularity and success in Australia
and New Zealand sports sedan racing.
My goal
is to document the existence of each tube frame
Monza racing chassis. Feel free
to contact me to share information, photos, or any corrections.
I am happy to credit your name, provide a link
to your website, or email address at your request.
Sincere thanks to those who
have contributed content or comments. You have helped
preserve a place in motorsports history for the
Chevrolet Monza race car.
